That is a very bad idea; the non-UltraDMA transfer modes don't include
the CRC error-checking code that is telling you that the data being
transferred is corrupted.

You can try a slower UltraDMA transfer mode; but, ultimately, you need
to understand that 18" is the maximum specified length for IDE cables
and that you should not expect things to work well if you exceed it.
