please excuse my intervention in the middle of
your discussion, but you do recall me of the
trouble i got from my Intel 830MP. as far as
i know, we are actually two using netbsd under
this chipset and X never worked right. as your
own Intel chipsets, it does steal memory from
the main memory as graphic memory, according
to what Intel docs say. well my agp device
reports about 8 mb of stolen memory and when
using 256 mb of ram or 1 gb of ram, no change
has been detected there :p

if i launch x, using it a little (for example
by using mozilla) freezes the whole machine.
it even burned once my bios and it costed
to have it fixed (logic card change...).

i am not sure it comes from x. i tried to use
linux on that machine and it went fine so
i would rather believe something is wrong in
our agp. as i cannot use linux over it,
i have been using my machine under console
since (that means over one year).

the other user under the same trouble is
japanese (i got his email somewhere in
my email archives) with the same machine,
a thinkpad x30 with 830mp.

tried to tweak agp0 and hardcode detected
memory value but x seems to search for it
and select a start offset and size automatically.
