thanks for the prompt reply. tried it. at least the hardware is now
recognised. it now beeps at regular intervals even after shutdown!

however it would appear the following is now the next problem

I note that FreeBSD has the pst driver for this card. Looking
at this has not helped me.

my next task is to try booting the freebsd install CD and check my
hardware is working ok. The LEDs flash in the correct pattern so it
thinks its working.
