Hello everybody,

I use a Creative SoundBlasterPCI 128 or something like that (supported by
NetBSD's eap-driver, Linux calls it esr1371). With SuSE GNU/Linux 7.3
(linux-2.4.20) and Windows2000 Professional it works flawlessly, and with
NetBSD 1.6.1 it basically works, too, but I get strange errors.
I installed 1.6 recently. Half of the times I fired it up, the soundcard was
recognized normally. But half of the times I got*lots* of these errors:

eap0: eap1371_ready_codec timeout 2
eap0: eap1371_ready_codec timeout 3

I found out others had these problem as well with 1.6. I even heard someone
suspecting a VIA-chipset to be the cause; I own a VIA-based board, too
(VIA82C686), and I already had some trouble with it, so I'm not surprised...
I also heard 1.6.1 fixed this problem, so I gave it an upgrade.
But the problem did not disappear, it got even worse. I get these
timeout-errors now at about 75% to 100% of all startups. ;-(
(My impression is, but I may be wrong, that GENERIC did behave even worse
than my custom-built kernel.)
If I try to play some sound, say an mp3-file, mpg123 complains about the
bitrate not being supported, consumes nearly all the cpu time, while *tons*
of the errors I already got at startup flood my syslog. ;-((

This is a major issue since listening to music is of major importance to me.
Is there any other solution to this issue besides getting a new motherboard
or soundcard?
