I turned off the beep in my shell.
Maybe your .shellrc changed?

   not sure which best place to ask about this, I upgraded from 1.5.3 to
1.6 a month ago, and just now to 1.6.1 kernel - under 1.5.3 my laptop
would beep (eg from xbiff), but under 1.6(.1) it wont! I have no =
soundcard
but a small speaker.. my dmesg output is attached, as you can see =
sysbeep
and pcppi all seem to configure ok?

I am using XFree86 (the version that came with 1.5.3 since the later one
doesnt work for me) but it wont beep from the console either so I dont
see that its X at fault.

Anybody got a tip for me?
