I second the vote for ThinkPads in general.  I've run NetBSD on both
A2x and T2x models and have loved it (though I perfer the T models since
they are lighter). They are also fairly rugged (one of my friends went
down at 75mph on a motorcycle and landed on his backpack, which contained
the a T20. When he got out of the hospital he brought the laptop in
and after plugging it in to an external monitor it ran just fine (screen
was a gonner though).).
