Can't tell you why, but I had the same problem when I upgraded my ThinkPad
755C to 1.6 from 1.4.1 (it uses the WD 90c24a chip).  I solved the problem
by ripping out 4.2 and downloading the 1.6 XFree 3.3.6 snapshot Manuel had
stored up on the NetBSD ftp site.

It might be nice if it said this and gave the option when installing the
sets, something like "older boxes may be happier with 3.3.6".
