So it's possible that the BIOS is stealing whatever port it's redirecting
and so subsequent BIOS based code doesn't see it. Since the bootblocks
use BIOS calls, they probably think they're outputting to the first
serial port on the machine.  Then when NetBSD boots, it probably then
again sees the two ports.

Just speculation.
