Yes, I've been working mostly with the drivers for the C&T
65550, which I understand is what drives the display on
these things.

Were you using an external monitor, or a different model of
laptop? Mine will do 800 x 600 x 24 on its internal TFT LCD.
I've spent some hours tweaking xf86config, with the
following results:

I can do 800x600 x 8 and it looks reasonably good.  If I try
16 or 24 bit colour the display goes into a 640x480 mode and
'pans' across the desktop.  It claims to be supporting which
ever colour depth I've selected, but looks wank in any case.

I'm starting to suspect that the problem lays with the
XF86_SVGA driver, but I'm not sure how to obtain a
replacement.

What version of XFree86 ships with NetBSD-1.5.2?
