I have a Epson 1240U and it works like a charm with sane and its
frontends.

Have a look at /sys/dev/usb/usbdevs, which lists the supported models
(some models not listed may be supported, though). 

Have a look at the sane web site, too: your model should be
recognized by sane in order to scan docs.
