Sawwwweeeet.  As a last resort trouble-shooting procedure on mine, I ended
up putting a couple different version of `d0z3 on, where the symptoms I
had with X repeated themselves (not able to go above 640x480 @ 8bpp even
with the correct video driver).  Now, unless windows was doing something
behind the sceens and not telling me (which is why I don't run that crap),
the problem was fixed by dozens of reboots into the BIOS/CMOS disabling
everything that didn't need to be enabled and changing other values such
as "video memory base address" until finally it would sync at 800x600 @ 16
or 24.

In all honestly, my problems may or less be more related to the onboard
C&T video more than Toshiba itself, but, these are the kinds of problems
I've come to associate with i386.  Random BIOS settings that you shouldn't
be able to change that can really ruin your day, random IRQ conflicts.
That's why I'm a sparc fan.  You simply don't have these problems
