Ugh.  It gets worse.  A 1.5 INSTALL_SMALL kernel hangs after 
"isa0 at mainbus0" -- the problem's evidently not in our PCI code.

Meanwhile, this vmware setup can run Linux and Win2k just fine.  WTF?
