It's worse than that, actually.  The USB Comm Class standard describes many
ways to make a modem.  The umodem driver handles modems that follow
the Abstract Control Model.  The standard allows other ways, the winmodems.
It's just that this latter part of the standard is pointless, because it doesn't really
specify the protocol to use. :-(
