Thanks, I'll give this a shot if I can get my modem working properly.

New information on my modem problem. I've been getting this message now 
that I have it configured properly:

bash-2.04# /sbin/dmesg | grep stray
stray interrupt 9

bash-2.04# /sbin/dmesg | grep com3     
com3 at pcmcia0 function 0 port 0x2e8-0x2ef: serial device
com3: ns16550a, working fifo

bash-2.04# /sbin/dmesg | grep pcmcia
pcmcia0: card irq 9

Any suggestions?  It's the modem that's not responding, and I'm not 
sure why.
