Thanks to Andrew Gillham's expert help I have now succeeded
in replacing Linux with NetBSD on my PC at home.  Turnkey is
pretty much what I have in mind for the smaller systems, but
now I have something a little more spacious to use as a
development system!  :-)  Thanks for your help too, it's
appreciated!
