Another data point:

I was upgrading an AMI BIOS 486 box to 1.5 yesterday. After installation
and rebooting a GENERIC-based kernel with wscons, the keyboard was
completely locked up. The system was otherwise functional. I tried all
kinds of different kernels until I realized that INSTALL doesn't use wscons.
Building a new kernel with pccons fixed it.
