I think some of this is driven by the embedded systems/telecom market. 
A friend used to work at a hard drive repair/data recovery company, and
they would regularly get requests for one of their old-old-old drives that
they kept in stock. Some PBXs and voicemail systems only take certain capacities
(or interfaces... ST-506...) of drives, and when the manufacturer stops
making them...

I have a 30Gb drive with a 2.1Gb jumper.
