Sounds like the X server isn't starting for one reason or another -
probably not happy with the config. I'm not an X hacker, so I'm going to
make a recommendation to simply your life....

Extract the latest pkgsrc, and install "XF86Setup", from the X11 set.
It's a graphical configuration tool for XFree*. It starts the server in
the most basic video mode and allows you to tweak everything in real time.

NOTE: Don't forget to run the vidtune application afterwards!

For instructions on how to get pgksrc, visit the website, or do it the
ghetto way:

mkdir /usr/src
cd /var/tmp
ftp ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-current/tar_files/pkgsrc.tar.gz
cd /usr/src
tar xzvf /var/tmp/pkgsrc.tar.gz
