Well, the bad news is, this made it worse; I couldn't obot with the card in
either slot.

The good news is, when I changed it from 1GB to 1.25GB (0x5...), it works
in either slot.

Of course, the machine still hangs if I yank the card out, but at least I
don't have to remember which slot to use.

*sigh*.  Almost everything works, anyway.  :)  Thanks again to all the
friendly folks on the NetBSD lists who have been answering these questions.
