How old is that disk? There have been spurious reports of old(ish) disks
in old machines not being detected. I have such a machine myself, but
I haven't had time to look into it (and it's currently gathering dust
in a corner). 

I hope to be able to look at it during the 1.5 release cycle, because this
is a relatively old problem.
