Ah, thanks.  I should have done a bit more searching.  I see from that page:

   Q: I installed my AVA-2902E card but I am not getting a BIOS banner? 

   A: The AVA-2902E does not have a BIOS, you will not get a BIOS banner,
   you will need to install the Operating System drivers to see the controller. 

That means to me that it is not possible to boot from this card, correct?
(If I'm not mistaken the "I" is an internal-only card, and the "E" is an
eternal-connector card.)

What would be a good, readily-available card to replace it with (something
I can boot from)?
