Have you tried using the ljet4 driver? I'd be surprised if it didn't work.
I'm using the ljet4 driver on a 4L (which may sound like a better match
than a 5L, however, the 4L is only 300dpi, so I have to add -r300x300 to
the commandline).

gs also shows the following device drivers in the standard install that
sound like they may work for you: lj5mono lj5gray.
