I do not know if it will be of any help, but I remember articles of the 
early 90ies that Adaptec had some kind of problems with the 1542C 
and/or CF models. These problems were found only when using 
these controllers under several Unix derivates and Adaptec fixed the 
problem by adding ferrite filters at some point of production.
