I tried today a -current boot floppy on a HP netserver wich has 2 integrated
895 chips. Each of them had an IBM (one of them is an HP but it's just an
IBM repackaged) UW disk (not LVD) and it worked fine.

I suspect here that your disks are operating at LVD where the controller
is in UW mode. Is it possible to force the disks in UW ?
Alternatively could you try a UW disk ?
