If the BIOS on Pentium class computers bind the IrDA device to a com
(serial) port, why can't we use the com (serial) drivers and put IrDA
support in application space?  That would make it much easier to
impliment and port across different Unix OS's right?

PS. On two of my laptops I have the IrDA set to /dev/com1 (or BIOS COM2).
