Jason, does this mean you KNOW how to change card-driver software?  Like
recompile the kernel? - or use 'modload' to install a new driver? - or what?
And can you take a look at my previosly mentioned problem with an SMC8216 -
neither the boot kernel nor the real kernel detects that its cable is
plugged into its 10BaseT/UTP port. And the 'media' parameter for 'ifconfig'
won't accept 'UTP' either.

I think the solution may be to somehow tell the respective kernels to use
a different (SCM-ULTRA?) driver instead of autodetecting - but HOW?
