I find the probe sequence strange. It should'nt do the register writabitily
test.
Can you confirm you have:
/*      $NetBSD: wdc.c,v 1.63 1999/03/25 16:17:36 bouyer Exp $ */
(look at file sys/dev/ic/wdc.c) ?
If not, could you try to update your sources ?
