 In his case the proxy-arp flag of pppd might be very useful. slattach
doesn't provide this feature and configuring this with ifconfig or arp  
might be less convenient than using pppd. 

 pppd /dev/tty00 9600 margo:ibiscus local proxyarp ipcp-max-configure 1000 

 on the server side is not that much complicate, there is no need for
any authentication here, thus no advanced setup required.
