The 82558 works with the fxp driver. I'm trying to avoid these, however,
because I didn't get diskless boot working with them and one doesn't get
reasonable documentation for the chip from Intel.
What I'm using now for my data acquisition systems are passive backplane
systems: Backplanes with 6 PCI and 1 ISA slots, and a slot for the CPU
module. This thing fits into a PC case too. (I'm putting 2 into a rackmount
enclosure.) That's all not too expensive, you can use whatever network
and SCSI adapters you like and still have 4 PCI slots free. And you can
upgrade the CPU later. (DEC even sold Alpha modules...)
