So, if you're going to kludge it, make it:

	(a) less obnoxious than a very device- and machine-dependent
	    sysctl, and

	(b) actually work as you intend.  (My SCSI card example has the
	    potential to still wedge a machine solid, even with your
	    suggested sysctl kludge, so why is it any better?)
