Yes, I have 3Com etherlink III in slot 1/1 (at least this is what
Windows NT exclaims). Anyway, card works fine under Windows NT (if you
can say anything works fine under NT).

Dmesg output was from kernel compiled with PCMCIAVERBOSE option, is
there anything else I could do?

Card identifies itself as 3C589C, maybe 3C589C differs from 3C589
(which is listed in supported hardware)?

No, machine is from Kapok Computer company (machine is sold with
another name in Finland, though). More details about this machine is
available from http://www.kapok.co.tw/5c.htm (I have model 5410P) -
should I step forward and try to beg technical data from manufacturer
if that helps to develop better support for laptops with Omega Micro
pcic (and if I do so, what should I ask for)?

So, it looks like I'm stuck with this machine when it comes to
networking with ethernet interface? Aaargh (there is very little hope
to get another laptop within few months from my employer).

I thank you and all others who have responded to my questions.
