My ethernet adapter ended up at ep1 also before I commented out the "ep0 
at isa?" line in my kernel config.

Ditto.  I filed a PR on it (#4386) a few months ago.  The symptoms have 
changed a bit over time, but it seems as if the disk drive isn't spinning 
up correctly.
