After a less-than-stunning uptime of 20 minutes, my 386 crashed again,
with the identical messages as in my previous mail.

Perhaps it's related to forking/execing? The machine was busy running
a shell script that repeatedly runs a PPP chat script until it connects.
It sleeps for 1 second between retries.
