  A good idea... it was even on my todo list :-)
  I got screen from pkgsrc (cool, it even installed texinfo for me...)
and that does the trick for now... 
 
  However, this doesn't deal the root cause: crashing when the are
characters in the input buffer and/or weird state on the control
lines. I will be upgraded to 1.3alpha soon, but I thought I'd raise
a flag anyway.
