Hmm,

some more thinking and discussion with my office mate made me
realize that I'd not compiled and installed the new gcc where the
infamous "elink3.c/mbuf.h" bug was fixed, and I presume 3c589
also uses the common elink3.c driver.  (Gcc wasn't installed
because my "make build" of two days ago bombed out compiling
usr.bin/fstat).  So...  I'm currently rebuilding gcc and I hope
this will make the problem go away.
