I did some testing on this by dumping a bit of the current-users
archive into hypermail. That's not brilliant, but it works all
right. The biggest problem is that you've got to divide it up into
smallish chunks (3 months or so for the busy lists) because hypermail
creates the index as one huge file.

I've used excite for searching on web servers before and I've been
quite pleased with it.

Note you'll probably need at least a half gig of storage space to
store all of the archives.
