The tip sounds reasonable; I tried to patch "something" in the connect()
wrapper in /sys/compat/linux/linux_socket.c (looking for EISCONN as return
value and returning 0 instead) and it didn't help... I'm not too sure I hit
the right spot. I looked at a ktrace but could not at all identify the
place where things start failing.

Could you please send me your modified "linux_socket.c"?

Thanks,
