I'm running the XFree86 3.2 S3 server on a Number Nine Motion 771 card
with 4 Mb RAM, and it'll let me run 1152x900 at depth=32, so I suspect
you'll be able to try something around that resolution in depth=16.
(I usually run at 1280x1024x16 because I find I don't miss the added
colour resolution, but unfortunately my monitor won't handle the dot
clock required by the really spiffy 1600x1200 resolutions and I
haven't toyed around enough to find something in the middle.)
