Hmm... I'd say:

	(1) Back up system.

	(2) Copy 1.1 kernel to /netbsd-1.1

	(3) Copy 1.2 GENERIC<whatever> kernel to /netbsd

	(4) Boot new kernel

	(5) Extract 1.2 binary sets (base, comp, ...) once you're
	    convinced the kernel isn't going to lose.

	(6) Manually merge any changes to the startup scripts in
	    /etc.

...fairly straightforward, actually.
