Apologies for the delay in joining this thread (just catching up on my
mail).  You mentioned my original message ... I solved (worked round?)
my serial problem by setting 'softcar' on tty00 in /etc/ttys.  I thought
that the cable I'm using had the correct wiring and that the modem
asserted DCD.  However, any open on tty00 would block - presumably waiting
for DCD.  I'm going to try and borrow a line analyser just to double check.
