thanks for the reply. I had already checked /dev - but your suggestion
triggered the possible solution. I should be using /dev/lpa1, as the
device is polled (I had left this at the distibution default)

I will have to wait until tomorrow morning to test  - the
installation is 50km away and the printer appears to be switched off.
