Yeah, that was the first thing I tried, but then pppd hung trying to
open the tty. Adding "local" solved it. Curiously, everything is
working just fine with pppd even though I use local now. Even dtr
lowering and similar features, which should not be present with local,
work.

My main concern, though, is the parallel port. :-|
