I have recently obtained a new PC, which is based around a
GigaByte-586ATE/ATM board. Unfortunately, I have had a lot of problems
with the board. The jumper settings, for example, are not printed
correctly in the manual and until today I have not managed to get that
bloody board configured to run at 120Mhz, nor did I get any reply out
of the customer service people.

But the main problem is the following: Both serial and the parallel io
interfaces do not work correctly. It seems that a certain signal is
missing. When I try to open /dev/tty01, for example, the fopen call
hangs until the program is interrupted. pppd refused to do anything on
the serial interface until I called it with "local" as parameter. (Now
it works correctly, though.)

The printer on the parallel device doesn't work correctly either. Once
I start printing, the kernel reports "printer offline". It prints a
few pages, nonetheless. I guess that the data flow control does not
work because the printer starts printing junk once its buffer is has
been filled. Until that point everything is okay.

The kernel recognizes everything correctly as far as I can say, plug
and play is switched off.

Did anyone experience similar problems or has anyone an idea what I
could try to fix that, besides relying on the so called "customer
support"? Or is this possibly a problem with my kernel?
