A similar hacked (but documented) extremely bad but 
tried (tested on different SMC and WD cards) program
can be found in ~ftp/pub/NetBSD/ports/i386/edset*
on this machine.

It should offer all functionality ones needs to automagically
set smc cards, though I wouldn't use it for a non smc/wd-card :-)
