GNOME is a too big for the mobilepro.  It requires at least 128mb of
memory, while the mobilepro only has around 16mb, not to mention the
processor speed. 

You might want to take a look at icewm, which isn't a full desktop
enviroment, but it works well on the mobilepro and has a "start" menu. 

Basically, there are no desktop enviroments that are going to work well
on the mobilepro, it is simply too slow.
