Hmm.  Actually, I haven't seen a sysinst kernel for hpcmips.  I checked=20
the manpage for init(8), and found that this is default behavior for=20
init when /dev/console does not exist.  I had been meaning to=20
repartition my CF anyway, so I booted into Newbie and recreated the=20
filesystem, including /dev/*.  The problem no longer exists and NetBSD=20
boots much quicker!

Yes, it seems as though this must be possible to tweak further.  I'm not=20
opposed to hacking kernel source; I've never hacked NetBSD before=20
though, just Linux (to a fairly limited extent).

Ah, that is very helpful.  Thank you.  The damn thing still makes that=20
annoying "Aha! I'm ON!" sound, though.

I've been looking at PockeTTY... it seems to work okay, but the terminal
is pretty ugly, and it costs $25 to register.  Oh, yeah, and it's=20
extremely slow.  I'm assuming the encryption is the speed-killer.
