Wow, this has issues.

I can't get the z50 to even install 1.6.1 on a Toshiba 2 gig pcmcia 
hardisk. I get kernel panics during untarring of the sets.

I'm able to build 1.6.1 using my Compaq 2010c, and then use that in the 
z50, but the z50 certainly has issues. I guess its the kernel. Even then, 
once, after a suspend, the every binary started erroring with 'wrong 
architecture' which is really bizzare.

I found a new kernel with screen blanking for the z50:
