OK, so I've pulled the kernel source from CVS.  And I've patched it for
the trackpoint.  Running config (after first compiling config from CVS), I
get:

../../../../arch/hpcmips/conf/files.hpcmips:425: undefined attribute 'vrip'
*** Stop.

Of course it's referring to one of the three lines you're supposed to add
to files.hpcmips.

Any ideas?
