I just thought of another thing. I'm not sure if this has been fixed yet,
but in 1.5ALPHA hpcmips if you tried to use the passwd utility you'd get an
error saying it couldn't determine the domain (I think, I made a previous
post to this list about it) so you had to use "passwd -l" to change the
local password. Being a relative NetBSD newbie I was quite perplexed about
this until it was explained how to bypass the problem.
