I think this is actually a 2.0.2 kernel with a -current bootloader, is
that why the kernel is showing itself to be current? I could have made
a mistake and used a current kernel, but I think this was a 2.0.2
kernel when I did mkboot to make it bootable.

For kicks, this machine is booting from an NEC Mobilepro 880 from a
USB pen drive as root and a USB ethernet adapter as well.

So far the machine doesn't work, but that's likely because it's 2.0.2
which is old. I need to build from -current and try again.
